Despite the fact that it snowed well into April, it is technically spring. And, even though it seems Mother Nature has attempted to trick us into believing it’s still winter, I can’t be fooled. I’m a warm weather guy who starts his countdown to summer in January, eagerly awaiting the day I can board a plane with ONLY a good book, flip flops and my swim trunks weighing me down. So, despite Sam Champion’s endless winter weather report, I know summer’s right around the corner. That means it’s time to ignore the winter boots lining your entryway, and get ready for the lazy days of summer ahead, when all you want is a good friend, a good wine and a good laugh while sitting on some machination of patio furniture. So here are my must-haves to get you ready for summer’s unofficial start, Memorial Day. First up, no warm weather gathering is worth its salt if you don’t have the right music to party to. I suggest making a playlist. Reason being, a playlist ensures you’ll have enough music to last the party’s duration, without running the risk of shuffle revealing your secret love of Air Supply to your guests. Next up, set up two bars, one inside and one out. People gather at the bar, and having two ensures there’ll be a flow to the party. Keep it simple. One giant tub filled with beer, soda and water. Another filled with white wine, vodka, champagne and all the fruit mixers. Pre-chop plenty of limes and lemons and if you feel extra creative, load skewers with raspberries, blueberries, pineapples, oranges and blackberries for people to add to their drinks. It makes it feel festive. Stick with hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill. They’re always a crowd pleaser and I say why mess with perfection? Stacks of beach towels, even if you don’t have a pool, and bins filled with different sized flip-flops are a nice touch to put everyone in the summer mood. And as your last and truly one essential item, put out a donation box, pens and stationary. People can empty their change (and then some) into the bin and write a thank you note to our troops that you can package up and donate to your local support our troops cause. Let those thank you notes remind us all of what summer’s unofficial start is all about in the first place.

This season, I zeroed in on 3 things that I called dibs on as soon as they arrived to our offices: the chevron box, the pebbled bowl and the lacquered crab. All three are small in scale but BIG in style. Their intended destinations in my home? I have a small fortune cookie-sized note that a loved one wrote to me. It’s been pinned on my mirror for well over a year now…its worn edges are proof of that. My brass inlay box is meant to be that note’s new home…a little treasure big enough to hold the love that’s hidden inside. The brass bowl is the perfect size to house what is one of biggest addictions, Nicorette. An addiction that has resulted in little silver tabs floating all around my house. I know, I know…you can join the countless throngs of people in my life that don’t get how I could quit smoking but not quit Nicorette. I promise I will…soon. In the meantime, keeping a well-stocked bowl by the entryway seems to be the obvious choice to contain the situation. And the crab? Well, that’s just fun. I think every room needs something that turns it on its ear. A little something that shows the world you’re not taking any of this too seriously.

Recently my assistant, Kelly had to make a decision about where to go on her honeymoon (check out her blog to see where she and her husband Seth decided to go). As a result of her honeymoon fate, we spent weeks musing about the pros and cons of Thailand, Turkey, Greece, Morocco and everywhere in between. All the talk about travel resulted in two things. First, I wanted to immediately book trips to every destination on her list. Second, I started to pine after the interiors I’d seen in each of the countries on her list. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to her top contenders. I’ve seen their beauty firsthand. More importantly, I’ve seen the beauty with which the people live in those countries. And, I’ve witnessed the especially special grace of how a bed is made a world away. In fact, I fell so in love with one guest bedroom in Morocco that I folded a part of that bedroom into my collection sold at Target. The end result is the chevron coverlet that just arrived to stores. As for getting the rest of the look, it’s all about loads of pillows, rugs,
poufs and the sparkly details that are accustomed to a
Moroccan bedroom. An example of which I found in one of
my favorite design blogs, Apartment Therapy. Need more
inspiration? Check out this video from A Bulls Eye View to
hear more about my inspiration for this coverlet!

With spring in the air and summer approaching, it’s time to dust off the patio furniture in preparation for grilling and relaxation time with my family! We don’t have a large space so we have to get creative on how to make it look cool and unique. I love a good lantern(s) to place around your deck. Here in Chicago it often gets too windy to use real candles, so I prefer to use a white or cream flameless candle, as they give off more light. If you can find the kind that comes with a remote control, then even better because in one click your patio is lit up and looking gorgeous! For those of you with a larger outdoor space and access to an electrical outlet, I also like the look of this outdoor lighting.

I’m really excited about my two most recent purchases because they are items expressly for new adventures right around the corner. After a lot of hemming and hawing over weekend Bloody Mary’s, my husband and I decided to take our honeymoon in Turkey in May. We will be there for two weeks – an unprecedented vacation length for me – and Turkey is such a big country, so I picked up a guidebook from my favorite series (DK Eyewitness Travel) to start planning our itinerary. Nate has piles of travel books all over his house in New York, so I knew I needed to follow suit and do a lot of research before getting on the plane.

My other most recent purchase is a brand-new sleeping bag for camping. I started backpacking and hiking last summer in Harriman State Park (only 1 hour from Brooklyn), and our next goal is to camp out overnight when the weather gets a little warmer. The amount of gear you need is incredible! Once you have it all, though, you have a free excursion and a night out under the stars (well, under the roof of your tent).
I can’t wait to test it out – it’s awfully cozy on my living room
floor for now!

A few years ago when Nate was transitioning from Chicago to his new place in New York, I was put in charge of coordinating his move on the Chicago end. Nate had 2 FRAGILE ceramic pineapples that took on a life of their own for me. For some reason I kept having nightmares about the pineapples falling off the truck. I had the movers bubble, peanut, double box and swear up and down they would put them in the safest spot on the truck.

800 miles later, they made it!

Whenever I see a photo of Nate’s home, I always look for those pineapples. And most of the time I find one staring back at me!!

When I found out Nate incorporated the pineapple into his line at Target- I knew I had to have it. Now I have a pineapple to call my own…

While I don’t have any proof to back up this statistic, I know 75% of you haven’t changed the floor plan of your living room in the past year. I’m right, aren’t I? Believe me; I get it. You sign the paperwork, get the keys, pack a kajillion boxes, unpack a million boxes (the rest of your kajillion having been relegated to the far wall of the garage until you “get to them in the spring”) and generally just want to be settled. By the time the furniture is in place and you’ve solved the issue of “what am I going to hang on that wall?!” you’re done. But, consider this. To make what is worn feel new again, all that’s required is a perspective change. You can’t move the doorway or knock down the wall to the see your room differently, but you can move the sofa. That one shift might be the key to re-imagining your entire space. You don’t even have to be as crazy as I am. When I say I want to move my favorite jute rug (big hint it’s in my line at Target…the braided jute rug in bronze. http://www.target.com/p/nate-berkus-braided-jute-rug-bronze/-/A-14176926#prodSlot=medium_1_39–it works wherever I put it) to a different room, the next thing you know, the entire house is being turned upside down. For you seventy-five-percenters, start with one room. I bet you’ll be amazed. You might even discover that what you hang on that wall today should have been what’s been hanging there all along. – Nate

About a year ago my team was in Kansas City for meetings. As is the usual for us the moment Tara, my creative director, and Kristin, my manager, broke from their meetings they pulled up a listing of antiques stores on their iPads determined to do a drive by on their way to the airport. It’s what we do wherever we land. From Tampa and Minneapolis to Tulsa and beyond, if we have 15 minutes free we’re on the hunt. We can case an antiques store in 5 minutes flat if we have to. In fact, it wasn’t but 2 minutes after walking through the door of a small shop that day that Kristin spied 2 vintage sconces hanging on the wall. Their scale was mammoth. Beyond knowing that they weren’t going to fit in her suitcase was the fact that they were too unwieldy in size to even consider hanging on her NY apartment wall. But, the style was amazing. That’s where the beauty of what we do as product designers kicks in. One sketch by Tara and an iPhone pic to me later, one of my favorite items of this collection was born…now at a scale that works for anyone’s home including Kristin’s NYC apartment. I love them as a pair to bookend for your mantle or one as a detail on a bookshelf. Happy Spring!

People speak Spanish, or write in Cyrillic, or are new to the area, out walking their dog and chatting with the neighbor who has lived there for some 50-odd years.
