House Beautiful, October 2002
The Next Wave |
|
Their inspiration runs from Billy Baldwin to Ralph Lauren, Dorothy Draper to Rose Tarlow. They live in Cape Cod cottages, Spanish Mediterranean casas, and urban lofts. They'll sit in everything from a Regency armchair covered in pony to Philippe Starck's see-through Eros chair. And almost all are fainting over chocolate brown (for now, at least). Meet House Beautiful's 15 picks for the next wave of design talent. You probably haven't heard their names yet, but you won't be forgetting them anytime soon.

Born: Los Angeles, CA, lives and works in Chicago, IL
HB: When did you realize you were a designer?
NB: When the drugstore mirrors that I installed on the ceiling began to rain on my ten-year-old face.
HB: Who inspires you?
NB: My mom, who has a 30 year-old design business, and auctioneer Leslie Hindman, who taught me to be a businessperson.
HB: What's your house like?
NB: A 19th century brick home that survived the Chicago Fire.
HB: What's your favorite local landmark?
NB: Lake Shore Drive - Chicago's freezin', hot-dog-eatin', bad-hair-causin' version of the Corniche.
HB: What's your favorite color combination?
NB: Chocolate brown with almost anything.
HB: If you had only one material to work with, what would it be?
NB: Leather. Clad the walls with it, inlay tables with it, tile the floor with it, dye it, wax it, cut it - it's like an afternoon at Elizabeth Arden.
HB: Who's your favorite decorator?
NB: Jacques Adnet and Samuel Marx, who designed or made almost everything for their interiors.
HB: What's your favorite chair?
NB: One of a pair of 19th century black painted Regency-style armchairs. The seats are covered in pony.
HB: What's the worst decorating mistake you've made?
NB: I didn't trust my instincts.
HB: If you had unlimited resources and could buy any antique, what would it be?
NB: A painting by Matisse. |
