Most interior designers urge clients to choose solids, which people are less likely to tire of, and to play with pattern in accent pieces like pillows. "My sofa has been upholstered in natural Belgian linen for 10 years, " says Nate Berkus, a Chicago designer who recently developed a line for Niedermaier Furniture. "I've never looked at it and thought, I wish it were striped."
