If you’ve ever wondered what daily life is like at Nate Berkus Associates in Chicago, you’ll love Lauren Buxbaum Gordon and Sasha Adler’s ArchitecturalDigest.com interview. They share their top picks for inspiration, how they found themselves working with Nate, and what they can’t live without. They also shared some fun insight about what it’s like to work for one of the best-known and admired design firms in the country. For instance, did you know…
Nate doesn’t have the biggest office.
“Sasha and I actually stole Nate’s old office — we threw him out after he moved to New York!” says Lauren. If that doesn’t give you a good idea of the relaxed feel here, this should do the trick: “We also have five dogs who always run up and greet everyone.” Design and dogs? We’re smitten…
Work doesn’t always look like work.
While there’s plenty of expected design work, with renderings and modelings and client meetings, a lot of Lauren and Sasha’s time is spent gathering inspiration. “We’re basically on Instagram or Pinterest every spare second we have, gathering ideas for our clients and ourselves,” says Lauren. And it’s not just an indoor job – Sasha’s favorite Chicago spots for inspiration are the Art Institute, the MCA, and restaurants with great design like Avec and Honey’s.
No revolving door here.
If you were picturing a “Devil Wears Prada” situation, think again: both Lauren and Sasha have been with the firm since they were interns, and have been with Nate for most of their careers. “That’s not unusual in our office; most people have been there for years!” says Lauren.
It’s safe to say that the only diva behavior here is from the office pups who spend their days in one of the most beautiful places in Chicago – and hey, we’re just fine with that.
