Ah, the great outdoors! If you’re lucky enough to have a backyard – big or small – then you know how easily it can turn a simple get-together into a festive, relaxed event.
Of course, that also means decorating appropriately. So we quizzed Nate, NBA’s co-design director Lauren Buxbaum, and the firm’s creative director, Lauren Ashley Allan, for their tips on dressing your outdoor space to the nines. Ready to head out?
NATE SAYS: Start with the table
“Setting the table is the perfect time to experiment. We bring our regular, indoor placements and cloth napkins for dinners by the pool, but will also keep things casual by setting up low tables and using pillows on the grass as seats.”
LAUREN BUXBAUM SAYS:
Palette is everything
“These days, there are so many options for outdoor textiles, you no longer have to upholster your chaises in pool-themed colors. In fact, a lot of outdoor fabrics are indistinguishable from interior options. We’re able to pull together sophisticated palettes in neutral textures and patterns to make outdoor spaces as chic as your rooms inside.”
LAUREN ALLAN SAYS:
Lean on landscaping
“I like to think of outdoor space as an extension of your home, so treat it in the same way: take risks and have fun! I have recently gotten into landscaping, it is an amazing opportunity to play with color, texture and scale. There are so many sculptural plants that can dramatically improve your outdoor space, it is a whole other world!”
