The word “shelfie” has been around a few years now, but the idea of snapping a well-styled, personality-filled photo of your bookcase is far older than that and it isn’t going anywhere. And with good reason: as far as social media trends go, this is probably the most aesthetically appealing one!
So, inspired by this photo from the Target catalog featuring Nate’s collection, we’re breaking down the essential elements of your perfect shelfie…
Like, first things first: BOOKS. Stack them horizontally, vertically, or both, just make sure they have a place on your shelf. Layer in accessories like a picture frame (with something special inside), some flowers or leaves in a vase you love, and a mirror and lamp to add extra dimension and light. And don’t be afraid to add thoughtful touches like a rock you found in a special place.

Above, left, is the bookshelf situation in Nate’s daughter Poppy’s bedroom – ripe for shelfies, with its combination of practical and whimsical accessories. Notice how family photos, mementos, and meaningful artwork all share the stage.
And above right, in Nate Berkus Associates co-design director Lauren Buxbaum’s home, fashion books mingle with organic accessories like shells and souvenirs around the globe. What a perfect way to tell her story.
You know that now we’ll want to see how you style your shelves, so take those shelfies and make sure to tag #MyNateBerkus!
