I love being in the same room as Joy Cho. And by that I mean in YOUR rooms. Because while our trademark styles may be different, you talented readers are styling pieces from our individual collections together in ways that are stylish, unexpected, and incredibly fun.
Before Joy brought her bright, cheery-chic style to Target, you probably knew her from her blog, books, and various other collaborations. She’s a real mover and shaker, and a seemingly endless well of innovative ideas for crafts, outfits, activities, and parties.
Beyond that, she’s a kind and generous part of the design world, and I’m thrilled to feature her here. Read on for a look at her bright and lovely home, as well as a peek into what she’s thinking about in terms of trends, “rules,” and more.
When it comes to decorating “rules”: Is there such a thing and if so, is there one you constantly break?
My only rule is to fill your home with things YOU love. Not what you think is trendy or what other people will like. It’s where you spend your time and it should provide you with joy every time you are there.
What is the most unexpected thing in your home?
I have some prints of steaks in the shape of states by a photographer in Philly named Dominic Episcopo. People are always surprised to see them since I’m not a big red meat eater. But they are so quirky and fun and they were one of my first real prints I bought as an adult.
What does your dream house look like and where would it be?
My dream house is a mix of modern and mid-century with a very open plan. Lots of windows and big doorways and space for my kids to play outside and for us to entertain! It’s so hard to find big backyards here in Los Angeles, so I would be happy even with a nice small sliver of green.
What’s your signature touch in your home or your personal style?
Lots of pattern and lots of gold.
What color/pattern/texture/style are you currently obsessed with?
I pretty much always fill my home with any current project we have. I might be biased, loving my own collections, but we design it based on what I would love to see in my home, so I’m pretty obsessed when it’s finally out in stores and I get to use it in real life!
